I’m weirdly very disappointed how they decided to do Space Jam again. The original Space Jam felt like a wild shot in the dark that someone thought would be very fun but also make them money. Make the Looney Tunes relevant again. Feature the biggest sports star of the time. Go all-in on being ridiculous. They weren’t trying to make something that would linger so deeply in the collective consciousness. The elements just happened to line up in such a way that it became something iconic of a time period. It didn’t feel like they were actively trying to capture the cultural zeitgeist beyond Michael Jordan.

Whereas you look at the new Space Jam, and it feels like such a hollow, blatant attempt to both appeal to the cultural memory of this weird one-off movie from the 90’s and incorporate aspects market research said are trendy. It ended up a perfect representation of the current movie industry’s focus on recognizability over substance or experimentation! The capitalistic system inevitably drove producers to more and more choose safe investments based on established properties, “sure things,” over taking chances on innovative, quirky, and original ideas! Don’t cut me off yet, I only had a glass.
