Dark ’N Jammy

TASTING NOTES: “Dark jammy fruit forward, rich full flavors expressing both the varietal and the Amador Terroir. This complex briary wine has currents, white pepper, mulberry, violets, a full tannin structure, luscious mouthfeel with a long firm finish.” (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.46, RS dry @ .14%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Dark ’n Stormy, the cocktail.

So the dark ’n stormy typically involves dark rum mixd with ginger beer over ice with a lime. Sometimes people add syrups or lime juice. Sometimes they add a cider or use bourbon. Those aren’t the canonical dark ’n stormy, though.

Speaking of the canonical dark ’n stormy, or perhaps it should be Dark ’n Stormy™, someone trademarked it. The Bermudian Gosling Brothers, a rum producer and distributor, claims to have invented the drink, originally using their Black Seal rum and Bermuda’s Barritt’s Ginger Beer (and then replaced the latter with their own ginger beer). Gosling Brothers prohibits any use of the exact name dark ’n stormy or anything similar unless you specifically use their Black Seal rum.

Because not everybody wants to use just that rum, there are “knockoff” versions of the drink. You might see it called the “Safe Harbor” in some places instead.
