Bronze Age Reputation, Vulcanized Truth

TASTING NOTES: “The 2022 vintage produced a full and fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon featuring characters of strawberry, mixed berry pie, and bright cherry on the nose. The palate leads to flavors of cherry cola, strawberry jam, and soft vanilla framed by a fine, structured tannin profile. The palate finishes with a subtle touch of French oak and an elegant balance between tannin, acidity, and body.” (AbV 14.1%, pH 3.82, TA 5.5)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Slingshot

Picture David versus Goliath and you’re probably picturing it wrong. The image most people have — a forked stick with two rubber bands and a little leather pouch — didn’t exist for another two and a half thousand years. What David actually used was a sling: a single leather strap, twirled overhead and released, no elastic involved. The Y-shaped rubber-band slingshot couldn’t be invented until Charles Goodyear figured out vulcanized rubber in 1839, which means the “slingshot” as a physical object is a 19th-century American innovation wearing a Bronze Age reputation.

NASA borrowed the name anyway, more or less accurately. A “gravitational slingshot” is how spacecraft steal a little momentum from a planet’s gravity to pick up speed without burning extra fuel — Voyager 2 rode a slingshot assist off Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus on its way out of the solar system, which is either the most efficient use of a shortcut in history or just physics being polite enough to give you a push.
