About Scheid Family Wines
Founded by Al Scheid in 1972, Scheid Family Wines began as only a series of vineyards, but evolved into its own family winery, with 12 estate vineyards (4,000 acres) across a 70-mile spread of the Salinas Valley. With the various microclimates and soils of the valley, Scheid have access to a surprising amount of variety in terroir.

“Deep and brooding, this Petite Sirah is brimming with aromas of blackberry, plum and black currant. The intense, jammy fruit provides the drama while subtle notes of mocha and hazlenut bring finesse. Stokes’ Ghost is full-bodied with balanced tannins and a finish that lingers on the palate. This rich, lush wine is just what the doctor ordered.” (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.54, TA 6.2 g/L)

James Stokes was a British Navy deserter who hopped ship in Monterey. When he did, he took with him a medical kit. Being a deserter with no profession, he built up a new life around a lie. He claimed he was a doctor, and somehow he managed to fail upwards. Despite numerous patients dying under his care, including the governor, he bought a big house, married the widow of one of his dead patients, and became Mayor of Monterey. He would end up supposedly poisoning himself in his later years. Some speculate that his children, the majority of which were born of his dead patient, found out about his lie, and, when confronted, James decided to kill himself.
