Do A Wallop

TASTING NOTES: “Pretty shade of ruby red with transparency. Wallop of red fruit running the spectrum of yumminess from cherry blossom to fresh strawberry all the way to compote. Toast and a quiet, already integrated, oak backbone frame the wine, while not taming the deliciousness quotient. The oak gives the wave of red fruit a kiss of fresh crispness while elongating the continuum into further ripeness. With air, misty menthol notes arise alongside the beautiful world of red.“ (AbV 14%)

VARIETALS: 90% Grenache, 10% Syrah

BARRELS: French oak, 20% new.

PAIRS WITH: Fresh fish with a frothy, creamy-but-light finishing sauce.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Wallop.

Weird word, wallop. Today we just associate it with a beating. But that meaning seemingly came out of nowhere in the 19th century. Nothing clearly links punching someone with the term prior to then.

In truth, it came from an older term to refer to galloping, walopen, with some old French and Germanic ties. Makes sense with how close it sounds to gallop.

Wallop could also refer to a large amount of something, or to boiling a liquid like bear or tea. Which in turn made wallop a euphemism for beer in England occasionally.

So yeah, get a wallop of wallop before you get walloped.
