THAT REMINDS ME OF: Meyer lemon.
The fruit on the label’s got a weirder backstory than you’d expect. It’s named for Frank Meyer, a Dutch-born USDA plant explorer who spent the early 1900s wandering China, Turkestan, and Russia scouting for useful crops to bring home — he’s the reason we have things like the Ussurian pear and this lemon-orange oddball currently making my kitchen smell incredible. The guy walked something like 30,000 miles collecting seeds and cuttings, mostly alone, mostly on foot.
And then in 1918, on a routine trip down the Yangtze, he vanished off the side of a riverboat. His body turned up days later. Officially it was ruled an accident, but the circumstances were murky enough that “did he fall or was he pushed” has been a low-key historical rumor for over a century. So somewhere in the DNA of your citrusy Sauvignon Blanc is a plant named after a man whose death is technically still an open question. Wine’s a delight. History’s a mess.
