Fata Morgana is a type of mirage most often seen over large bodies of water but can be seen anywhere, really. There have been stories of floating islands, unknown landmasses, ghost ships, and UFO’s for centuries. A lot of Arctic and Antarctic explorers had observed previously unknown lands and mountain ranges that altered their voyages and changed their worldview, only for those lands to turn out to be nothing but weird reflections on the horizon. A Fata Morgana occurs when light rays bend as they pass through layers of air at different temperatures within an atmospheric duct, a layer in the lower atmosphere where light and other airborne waves follow the curvature of the Earth with little attenuation. A lot of words. Basically, what is on the horizon or unseen just below the horizon is reflected in the air up to several times stacked on top of each other. The image might be upside down or rightside up for each piece of the stack, and the mirage can change rapidly. These mirages can’t be too high above the horizon, however, given the layers of air involved, and they can’t stretch the length of an object reflected.
