TASTING NOTES: “This is an approachable wine, with a lush pallet that is framed by integrated tannins, and bright acidity. Slightly oak sweetness accompanies blackberry jam on the nose which continues onto the palate where it fills out the mouthfeel. The dark fruit comes through on the pallet with black cherry and plum with a hint of baking spice to round out the experience.” (AbV 14.8%, pH 3.55, TA 0.72 g/100mL)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Grasshoppers, like the one on the bottle.

Fascinating bugs that have been around since about 250 million years ago. They are generally bigger than crickets and have slightly different body structures, although some of them do also have chirping capabilities. That behavior is known as stridulation, and it is produced by those pegs or spines you see on their legs. By rubbing them up against the edge of their wing, it makes a noise. Think like when you rub your finger along the edge of a comb.

Fun fact: their ears are on their midsection. Technically not ears as we know them, but their hearing organ is essentially exposed eardrums on top of their thorax. Imagine hearing with your sides.

Some grasshoppers are also known as locusts. You know, like the plagues. Most of the time, these grasshoppers are just like normal ones. If you get enough of them together, however, things start to change. The more they rub up on each other in a group, particularly those hind legs, the more serotonin is released. When this happens, they change colors and start swarming, devouring crops and breeding easier. Scientists were able to trigger the transformation by tickling them. So, uh, don’t let them get into your depression meds.
