TASTING NOTES: “While our Russian River Valley Zinfandel provides a fruit forward, medium-bodied experience with more balanced tannins and a velvety mouthfeel with a long, seductive finish, our Los Chamizal Vineyard Zinfandel has a deeper berry fruit quality with more tannic structure on the finish. Each of our single-vineyard Zinfandels reflects the distinct qualities of its terroir.”

“The complex soils here range from volcanic ash to igneous rock, and the significant sun exposure in the area creates an ideal setting for growing classic zinfandel. So, you know how the border between the US and Mexico is largely based on the Río Grande in places? What happens if the river were to, say, move quite a bit to the south? Well, it happened.

In 1864, a flood caused the river to move further south, considerably so. Land that was once Mexican started to be settled by settlers from the US as part of El Paso. It created a contested zone where Americans began acting as if they were in control of the region while the prior residents and the Mexican government never actually ceded that land.

And guess what? It took a hundred years to settle the dispute. There was actually no resolution to whether the area was Mexico’s or the United States’ until after John F. Kennedy proposed finally putting it to rest in 1961 and Presidents Adolfo Lopez Mateos and Lyndon B. Johnson met in 1964 to finish things. El Paso residents in the Chamizal Zone would be displaced, and a permanent channel would be dug to prevent the river from shifting again.
