TASTING NOTES: “The deep garnet color of this wine hints at the beauty and power to follow. Aromas of black cherry and dark chocolate meld with subtle hints of kirsch and coffee bean, exciting the palate. From the first sip through the finish, the wine is lithe and seamless. There is a savory quality, balanced by velvety tannins and bright acidity. The finish has a wave of black currant liqueur washing over a fresh minerality.” (AbV 15.5%, pH 3.72, TA 0.58 g/100mL)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Coomb.

As seen in Coombsville here, but it’s in other names as well. So, coombs. What the heck is a coomb? Does coomb even refer to a specific thing? It had to come from somewhere, right?

In English, like “proper” English, the kind that comes out of England and particularly southern England, the coomb is a valley or basin. It can be alternatively spelled comb, cumb, combe, or even coombe. Likely originating from the Proto-Germanic kumbaz, which in turn seems to have been borrowed from various other pre-existing languages with words sounding like “kumb,” it referred to bowls, basins, and vessels. You can easily see how it came to refer to something like a valley.

Surprisingly, or perhaps not, it has nothing to do with a comb, which instead comes from the Proto-Germanic kambaz.

Which actually sounds really close to kumbaz yet is somehow still completely unrelated.
