TASTING NOTES: “This elegant Merlot greets the nose with rich aromas of ripe cherry and violets, followed by a lush mouth feel with layers of blackberry, currant, and a touch of chocolate. These flavors combine with soft and supple tannins to create a long, silky smooth finish.” (AbV 14.3%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Bob “Moon” Mooney from The Beatniks.

Most people know Paul Frees as an actor and comedian, but in 1959, he tried writing and directing a film. That film would be The Beatniks, which has little to do with actual beatniks. In it, Eddy Crane runs with a gang of friends who commit robberies until a music bigwig happens to hear him singing with a jukebox. Eddy takes the opportunity for stardom offered by the executive, but with increasing reluctance brings his gang along with him. Eddy seems like he’s on the verge of dropping them, but they keep dragging him back into their reckless acts.

It hits the breaking point, however, when Bob “Moon” Mooney kills a barkeep, who before dying shoots another member of the gang. Mooney is probably the best part of the movie. Man is an unhinged, desperate psychopath who delivers some great lines. These include threatening to kill a hotel manager, but does so by threatening to “Moon” him, and yelling out a hotel window, “I killed that fat barkeep!”

It’s fun. And apparently public domain.
