TASTING NOTES: “With savory aromas and a deep luscious color, this much-loved wine strokes your palate with flavors of dark cherry, blackberry and cassis. The thick velvety texture gives way to toasty oak and finishes with just a hint of chocolate.” (AbV 14.9%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Ty Inc., the makers of Beanie Babies.

In 1993, Ty Warner of Ty Inc. debuted Beanie Babies at the North American International Toy Fair. Little stuffed animals filled with small plastic pellets rather than typical stuffing, they were marketed to smaller toy retailers. From 1994 to 1995, sales were mostly low and slow, but something changed that next year. Ty got a website, one of the first of its kind. And then, they had to discontinue Lovie the Lamb due to a supply issue. When this and the insinuation that others might be discontinued in the future hit, demand suddenly increased.

The company would begin to employ a strategy of deliberate scarcity, limiting how many of each plush could go to each store, and producing each design for a limited run. A massive secondary market grew out of it, and Beanie Babies became an “investment” through the remainder of the 90’s. People started counterfeiting them, to the point of arrests. The fad ran its course, however, and Ty concluded the initial run in 1999 with a bear named “The End.”
