About Zaca Mesa
Only the third winery in Santa Barbara County when it was established in the early ‘70s, Zaca Mesa steadily grew from upstart “vineyard wildcatter” to the Central Coast heavyweight it is today. The Syrah they planted in 1978 is today the renown Black Bear Block, the oldest Syrah block in the Central Coast. Their 1993 Zaca Mesa Syrah was the first (and still one of only two) Central Coast wine to achieve a Wine Spectator Top Ten. That Syrah was also chosen to accompany the official State Dinner for French President Jacques Chirac at the White House in 1996.

As a vineyard and winery pioneer in the Santa Barbara County, Zaca Mesa has served as the training ground for generations of great winemakers. So many Zaca veterans have gone on to become industry leaders (the founders of Byron, Ojai, Au Bon Climat and Qupé, for example), the winery earned the nickname “Zaca University.” They’ve embraced this role, offering in-person educational events and online resources to help wine lovers better understand winemaking processes and vineyard techniques.
