Our Lady of the Beheaded

TASTING NOTES: “Dizeres Tinto is a red blend from an area of the Alentejo region near Campo Maior which immediately adjoins the border of Extremadura in Spain. This wine was created with the intention of providing an unaged and approachable red blend which represented the characteristic varietals of the region. The blend of the wine combines an indigenous Portuguese grape, Trincadeira, which is notoriously temperamental and difficult to cultivate but which is also prized for its complex and richly flavored grapes and Aragonez, a Portuguese synonym for the Tempranillo grape. The combination of these two grapes in this wine, which is fermented in stainless steel, offers an abundance of ripe red fruit, berries, and tart acid along with characteristics of pepper and dried spices.” (AbV 13.5%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Nossa Senhora da Graça dos Degolados.

Portugal is divided into freguesias, civil parishes, which make up the various municípios, or municipalities. Each freguesia has a small executive council and an assembly for local legislation. Campo Maior, considered a municipality, currently has three freguesias in it. For a little over 150 years, it’d contained only two: Nossa Senhora da Expectação (Our Lady of Expectation) and São João Baptista (St. John the Baptist).

In 1926, another parish was added: Nossa Senhora da Graça dos Degolados. This translates to “Our Lady of the Grace of the Beheaded.” Which I find to be sick as hell.
