About Arbuckle Ridge Winery
Cabernet Sauvignon is the focus of Arbuckle Ridge, back to when Jim and Debi Saunders planted it on the Saunders Vineyard in 1992. Scott Saunders took the time he spent working the vineyard and the winery, and from it he made his own official brand of wines: Arbuckle Ridge Winery. Named for the soil found in the Saunders’ Paso Robles vineyard, the key to Arbuckle’s wines is balance, never letting one attribute outshine another.

TASTING NOTES:
“Deep ruby-red. Strong oak character on the nose, displaying scents of blackberry, blueberry, vanilla and cola, along with an exotic hint of fruitcake. Fine-grained, open-knit dark berry and cherry preserve flavors are complicated by floral and oak spice notes that fan out slowly on the back half. Finishes smooth, spicy and quite long, with supple, even tannins coming in late.” (AbV 15.49%)

So what the heck is an Arbuckle. No, not the doof from Garfield. I’m talking about this Arbuckle soil. Well, Arbuckle is a soil series. What is a soil series? It’s a level of soil taxonomy laid out by the USDA. You’ve got orders, suborders, great groups, subgroups, families, and lastly, the series. Arbuckle is officially described to have a “very gravelly sandy clay loam” texture at its deepest, is generally yellowish brown, moist, slightly acid (pH 6.2 - 6.5), and slightly alkaline. You’ll find Arbuckle along the west end of the Sacramento Valley as well as several intermountain valleys throughout Southern California.
