The Las Madres Vineyard, farmed with meticulous attention to the vine’s natural expression, produces Syrah fruit of uncommon quality: the site’s unique combination of elevation, exposure, and well-drained soils creates a natural environment for grapes of aromatic intensity and structural purity that Belharra vinifies with a light, respectful hand inspired by the great winemakers of the northern Rhône. THAT REMINDS ME OF: Belharra, the winery’s name, borrowed from a Basque coast surf spot.

I keep thinking about how little of a wave is actually water. A swell crossing an ocean is mostly energy, and the water itself just moves in small circles, up, forward, down, back, ending up roughly where it started. If you dropped a cork out there, it would bob politely while a storm’s worth of power passed underneath it. A big swell can travel for days like that, looking like nothing. It’s the world’s slowest and most committed package delivery.

The package only gets signed for when the seafloor shows up. Once the water gets shallow relative to the wave’s length, the bottom of each circle starts dragging, the wave slows down, the back of it catches up with the front, and everything stacks into a wall. An underwater bump turns days of invisible travel into one very visible afternoon. I find that weirdly moving, and I’m aware that I’m getting sentimental about fluid dynamics in a wine blurb (why not).
