2022 Belharra Las Madres Estate Syrah, Carneros, Sonoma County
Belharra focuses on pure terroir from Northern California, crafting wines with careful vineyard selection and minimal intervention. Gentle cellar work and small-lot blending preserve aromatics, structure, and character. The result: expressive, elegant wines—vibrant now or age-worthy later.
The 2022 Belharra Las Madres Vineyard Syrah is a wine of northern Rhône soul and distinctly Californian terroir expression — a single-vineyard Syrah of exceptional aromatic complexity, structural precision, and the kind of savory, compelling personality that places it among the finest California expressions of this noble variety.
The Las Madres Vineyard, farmed with meticulous attention to the vine’s natural expression, produces Syrah fruit of uncommon quality: the site’s unique combination of elevation, exposure, and well-drained soils creates a natural environment for grapes of aromatic intensity and structural purity that Belharra vinifies with a light, respectful hand inspired by the great winemakers of the northern Rhône.
The 2022 vintage produced a Las Madres Syrah of exceptional vibrancy: aromas of fresh dark cherry, black olive tapenade, cracked black pepper, smoked meat, violet, graphite, and a beautifully clean mineral note lead to a medium-to-full bodied palate of focused energy, silky tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory, complex finish of genuine distinction and personality.

Belharra is the name of a legendary surf spot located on the Basque coast off Socoa, France, where storm tides hit an underwater outcropping and cause a rare wave of immense power. Such forces, after a vast journey, create a diverse natural beauty. Our philosophy mirrors the riders of these waves: patiently waiting for opportunities, understanding the contours of each current and practicing the craft with vigilance.
Anne W. Fogerty
Hard work, community, and sharing an infectious smile were the mainstays of a first job at the age of 13 behind the counter of a neighborhood hardware store in Minnesota. Employment in the vineyards led to a job in the winery, and the opportunity for more learning and even longer days. Caught up in the promise of adventure and travel in wine production, Anne followed harvests around the world after college, always landing back in northern California among family and friends. She enjoys the sunshine here year-round, while building towards her professional and personal goals.
Camille E. Gaio Raised in the French Alps, Camille graduated as a sommelier and worked across France before shifting her attention to an education in wine science and viticulture at the University of Bordeaux while working for a premium Chateau. Camille turned a love of the alpine slopes into a love of the ocean swell while on the Western coast of France, and followed the waves and vines to dynamic international vintages in California, Australia, and New Zealand. She is now continuing her growth in Napa Valley, always with an eye on the tide.

More than a bit of love for their wines over on Wineberserkers, including this syrah although not this vintage. Berserkerday and Vindependence day participants as well. Another winemaker stated that the vineyard is a dope-site for syrah. And a comment on old world meets new world.
Any value to this info? Maybe… but maybe not so in that case if I were you, I’d just keep driving past all this useless and important information
A Casemates Flying Monkey dropped off a sample bottle late on Tuesday. Slightly warm bottle, but nothing looked damaged. Cork was fine, no seepage and not pushed out.
Used my Coravin and poured 2 glasses. One for initial Pop 'n Pour (PnP) and with dinner, 2nd to sit for an hour.
Tasted on initial PnP, then with a Ribeye & Baked Potato. Delicious on both instances. As well as the 2nd glass (the one left slightly covered to keep any dust out).
Nicely deep purple color, thick legs, quite opaque. Smooth and warm on the tongue. Nose had aromas of dark cherry, black pepper, clean notes leading to a medium-to-full bodied palate of soft tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory, complex finish.
Winery priced at $40, showed $34 on Vivino. Casemates has excellent price points!
On the fence, all because while I did enjoy this wine, I NEED to reduce from 3 Large wine lockers to ONE Large! So while I want to go in on this, I really need to buying!
@MarkDaSpark@rjquillin you have a particularly dusty house do you? Perhaps you could afford some air filtration if you didn’t have so damned much wine ha!

Typo. It’s “Las” not “Los”
@losthighwayz What, are you one of those anti-“choose your own pronoun” people?

@kaolis
You could be kind and link in WB, for those of us too challenged to find it for ourselves
@rjquillin for those of you too lazy to look yourself click here and sort through the noise
@kaolis I did notice Brig was thinking
@kaolis went through a case of their rose offered last WB. Good stuff.
@kaolis @losthighwayz I’ll add that I’ve had Syrah from this vineyard but not this producer and was quite pleased.
TLDR: 90/100 Marvelous daily drinker

Will post additional after 2nd tasting on Friday.
@MarkDaSpark
For the second tasting, are you going to allow some decant and air time, or just pour fresh from that Coravin’d bottle?
@MarkDaSpark detect any funk or gaminess?
@MarkDaSpark @rjquillin you have a particularly dusty house do you? Perhaps you could afford some air filtration if you didn’t have so damned much wine ha!
@rjquillin both
@losthighwayz Neither
@kaolis @rjquillin
With 2 granddaughters and 2 cats, there’s bound to be something in the air!!!

Labrat Part Dos / Deux
Having some Manchengo cheese with today’s first glass. Delisioso!
Still not a tannin monster, the tannins play well! No real changes, but will see after decanting it.
Cork removed for decant …
Part 2a:
Went well with the pasta & chicken for dinner.
A little bit longer on the decant. Patience is a Virtue!

Decanter glass …

Once again no winery participation kills the deal for me. Was on the fence
@losthighwayz
It’s only a 1 day … hard to get winery participation. Not impossible, but it is hard.
And if I really wasn’t on a SIWBM, I would have gone in!
