About Cabana Winery: “After 19 years of making wine at Renwood, which I founded and named after my wife Rene, we were looking for a new challenge. My daughters wanted to open an urban winery and I wanted a boutique winery where we could produce wines from the best vineyards and control the process. Cabana was born in 2011, our first 7 years were in Sacramento, and as the focus became on expanding our production, we moved to Lodi. At Cabana, we ferment in small lots and barrel-age the wine in French oak. Then I used my 30 years of wine-making experience to produce the final blend of our award-winning wines. We now produce 18 wines from Lodi, Napa, and Amador counties.”

TASTING NOTES: “A rich golden yellow color, our chardonnay has inviting aromas of pears and figs, with strong notes of caramel and toasted vanilla. A medium bodied wine with layers of creamy texture. The oak flavors are balanced with a touch of acid leaving you with a smooth velvety finish.” (AbV 13.5%, pH 3.49, TA 0.66 g/100mL, RS .05%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: KaBlam! The 90’s were definitely a time of experimentation when it came to television. A lot of throwing everything at the wall and seeing what stuck. KaBlam! exemplified this more than any other “cartoon” at the time. A comedy anthology of short sketches that ran for four seasons in the late 90’s, it served as a showcase for alternative art and animation styles.

Though the lineup of shorts changed both from episode-to-episode and season-to-season, there were a few that featured more heavily than others. The most well-known was probably the Action League Now!, a stop-motion super-hero serial where four modified action figures/dolls bumble their way through preventing crimes in a suburban house, usually perpetrated by “his dishonor” The Mayor. They’d time it to have a commercial break toward the end of the segment to up the suspense. There was also Prometheus and Bob, a claymation series where an alien attempts to teach a neanderthal various skills, only to get injured when things go wrong. In Life with Loopy, kinda eerie puppets with stop-motion magnetic faces Larry and his sister Loopy deal with strange situations, often because of Loopy. Sniz & Fondue was probably the most straightforward, just an animated show about dysfunctional animal roommates. The rest were a hodgepodge of other off-the-wall one-offs and less frequent segments.
