A rich golden yellow color, our chardonnay has inviting aromas of pears and figs, with strong notes of caramel and toasted vanilla. A medium-bodied wine with layers of creamy texture. The oak flavors are balanced with a touch of acid leaving you with a smooth velvety finish.
The 2022 harvest was excellent for chardonnay. The weather was great, and the crop ripened to perfection. We crush and press our grapes at 23 brix, we made a small acid addition. The wine was fermented for 6 months in new French Oak, Sur Lie style. The wine is aged with the lees and stirred daily to bring out the rich flavors. We also ensure the wine completes secondary fermentation, to enhance the rich buttery flavor. Filtered and bottled 1 year after harvest.
Pairs well with delicate fish, chicken dishes, or an endive salad.

12x 2022 Cabana Winery Chardonnay, Lodi, California
After 19 years of making wine at Renwood, which I founded and named after my wife Rene, we were looking for a new challenge. My daughters wanted to open an urban winery and I wanted a boutique winery where we could produce wines from the best vineyards and control the process. Cabana was born in 2011, our first 7 years were in Sacramento, and as the focus became on expanding our production, we moved to Lodi. At Cabana, we ferment in small lots and barrel-age the wine in French oak. Then I used my 30 years of wine-making experience to produce the final blend of our award-winning wines. We now produce 18 wines from Lodi, Napa, and Amador counties.
Our heritage is from Boston and Newport, RI. Cabana’s name is from our days at the beach in Newport. RISKs our premium wines stand for Robert, Irene, Sarah, Kelly & (son-in-law, Sam) the Smerling family. RISK Cabernet, is the pinnacle of my 30 years as a winemaker, winning numerous double gold medals.

Cabana 2022 Chardonnay - Lodi
Good day everyone! I’m happy to be a Lab Rat for today’s offer of Cabana 2022 Chardonnay. Previous offers from this winery were a Petit Sirah in January and a Cabernet Sauvignon last July - both had fairly positive reviews. I love a good chardonnay, and I typically gravitate towards crisp, non-buttery chards. My spouse & daughter joined me for this tasting.
The wine is in a screw top bottle, which I think is fine for this price point. The label indicates the wine is produced in a classic French style, and aged in French Oak. Looking at the winery’s website, the 2021 Chard is priced at $20 - I’d expect the 2022 to be similarly priced.
In the glass, the wine is clean, clear and is between pale gold and medium gold in color.
On the nose, we definitely smelled the butter we expected, but not overpoweringly so. My daughter was getting cantaloupe and pineapple, as well as an earthy, oaky fragrance with a slight edge of saline. I did detect some floral undertones, possibly honeysuckle as the label indicates.
On the palate, we were tasting golden apple and slightly unripe pear, with toast on the finish. The butter is there too, but this isn’t a butter bomb. There’s a bit of acid, particularly on the long finish, but it’s very pleasant.
We initially paired the wine with Manchego cheese; a great match with the creaminess offsetting the wine’s acidity. Accompanying our dinner of Salmon with Pistachio Basil Butter, the wine continued to be in harmony, the fattiness of the fish and butter with the saltiness of the pistachios complementing the wine’s butteriness and acidity.
In summary, we really liked the wine and would consider purchasing a case, especially at this price. Thanks Alice and Casemates for the opportunity to taste some great wine!
This is a painful review to write because I want to be positive about peoples efforts but I must conclude that I got a spoiled bottle of this wine because I can find nothing positive to say-it tasted almost like cleaning fluid (not that I have a lot of experience tasting that). After reading the other Rat review I must conclude that my bottle was off for some reason.
@dianefreda Please describe the palate of the cleaning fluid. I will use it to determine if I should purchase a case, as I have a particular brand of cleaning fluid I enjoy.
