About Cabana Winery: “Cabana was born in 2011, our first 7 years were in Sacramento, and as the focus became on expanding our production, we moved to Lodi. At Cabana, we ferment in small lots and barrel-age the wine in French oak. Then I used my 30 years of wine-making experience to produce the final blend of our award-winning wines. We now produce 18 wines from Lodi, Napa, and Amador counties.”

TASTING NOTES: “This wine is deep-purple hued with aromas of bramble blackberry, blueberry, violets, and dried sage. The palate has flavors of dried black plum, mulberry, black cherry, orange zest, and cardamom intertwined with chicory, chocolate, and a dry, silky finish. Decant for an hour and enjoy.” - Wine Enthusiast

VARIETALS: Petite Sirah

BARRELS: 18 months in French oak.

PAIRS WITH: BBQ, Italian and Mexican food, grilled meats, and “bold cooking.”

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Cortana.

Remember, it was Microsoft’s virtual assistant thing? First demonstrated in 2014, it lasted up to 2023 when service was discontinued in Microsoft products. It was sort of a competitor for Siri and Alexa, but not quite? In 2017, they even made it possible, through an Amazon partnership, to easily interchange between Alexa and Cortana on Echo and Windows devices. Following 2019, Cortana had its presence on Microsoft products diminished and scope reduced, no longer a full-on virtual assistant. The final Cortana integration was removed in 2024, nailing the coffin shut.

Anyway, I always thought it was fun that they named it Cortana, after the Halo character. They even had her voice actor, Jen Taylor, provide her voice for the assistant.
