“This wine is deep-purple hued with aromas of bramble blackberry, blueberry, violets, and dried sage. The palate has flavors of dried black plum, mulberry, black cherry, orange zest, and cardamom intertwined with chicory, chocolate, and a dry, silky finish. Decant for an hour and enjoy.” - Wine Enthusiast
Winemaker Notes
The 2022 vintage was big, with warm days and cool nights. The grapes were picked at 24 brix. Fermented in small lots over 8 days, to capture the dark purple color. Barrel aged in French Oak for 18 months to infuse the wine with oak tannins. The wine was filtered at bottling to ensure smooth drinking
Pairs well with BBQ, Italian, and Mexican food, grilled meats, and bold cooking.

After 19 years of making wine at Renwood, which I founded and named after my wife Rene, we were looking for a new challenge. My daughters wanted to open an urban winery and I wanted a boutique winery where we could produce wines from the best vineyards and control the process. Cabana was born in 2011, our first 7 years were in Sacramento, and as the focus became on expanding our production, we moved to Lodi. At Cabana, we ferment in small lots and barrel-age the wine in French oak. Then I used my 30 years of wine-making experience to produce the final blend of our award-winning wines. We now produce 18 wines from Lodi, Napa, and Amador counties.
Our heritage is from Boston and Newport, RI. Cabana’s name is from our days at the beach in Newport. RISKs our premium wines stand for Robert, Irene, Sarah, Kelly & (son-in-law, Sam) the Smerling family. RISK Cabernet, is the pinnacle of my 30 years as a winemaker, winning numerous double gold medals.

Hi Wine Gang,
Give this 2022 Petite Sirah from Cabana Winery in Lodi a try! It started with a deep inky opaque color in the glass with aromas and palate of plum and blueberry (black fruit), and an herbaceous palate of dried black plum, pepper and sage. This dry wine paired very well with my smoked NY steak burger with fries and salad, and improved with aeration or decanting; the tannins softened by night “two.” The finish had a nice hint of cocoa and smoke (thus a great pairing with smoked meat) from 18 months of aging in French Oak! An excellent value at $7.99, sells elsewhere for $25.
Also, on winebusiness.com, Cabana has bulk 2022 Petite Sirah available, 500 gallons at $13 a gallon if you have a few carboys hanging around you’d like to fill, and 392 cases of shiners at $84/cs inquire here
I am horribly sick and definitely should not be drinking anything other than water. Fortunately, my husband volunteered to “take one for the rats” and step in on my behalf. He’s mostly a whiskey/bourbon drinker and has been going through a (mostly) dry January - so I was eager to hear his thoughts on this since he’s not a man of many words.
The one thing I can offer is the color of this wine is a stunningly beautiful shade of crimson. “This is the color of wine they use in Vampire movies”. So for all you Vampire cosplayers out there - you’re welcome.
The bottle is a twist top - and I did attempt to sniff at it, but being sick prevented that from happening. The husband said “it doesn’t really have a smell”.
I sat and wrote down his reaction: Thin. Wood. Dry but low tannins? Is that what they call it? I like it. Mild grape but I can taste the wood which is good for me. Would probably go good with the chili you made.
He put it down for about 10 minutes and came back to tell me “Heh - it smells great now that it’s open. Here…oh. Nevermind. Cherries, berries…it smells good.”
“I’m going to make a New York Sour with this!”
And he did:
He said it works exceptionally well in this drink and that we should get a half case so I can have one when I’m feeling better.
“Oh, and so you can have just the wine when you’re better. I think you’d like it a lot.”
Might try this in a Sour. I bought a Cabana petite Syrah on a previous offer and found it completely undrinkable, like I don’t even feel comfortable giving a bottle to people who aren’t into wine. so it’s just living in my basement where it can’t hurt anyone
