A big plush wine, with loads of blackberries, and dark chocolate. A full-bodied wine, with a nice balance and big tannins, giving a “silky” feel on your palate. Lovely aromas of cedar and black pepper waft through the wine. This is a full-bodied wine, that will age well but is meant to be enjoyed now. It can handle your spiciest cooking.
The 2022 vintage was big, with a warm, hot growing season. The grapes were picked at 24 brix. Fermented in small lots over 8 days. Barrel aged in French Oak for 18 months to infuse the wine with oak tannins. The wine was filtered at bottling to ensure smooth drinking.
“Petite Sirah is one of the darkest grapes grown in California, arriving in America in the 1880s from France, it has flourished in the rich California soil. Becoming a mainstay of Lodi wine production. I love it when people say they never have tasted Petite Sirah, because most Cabernets have 1 to 2 % added to help darken the color for many decades. It has been only recently, that passionate winemakers have produced high-quality Petite Sirah, by lowering the yields and raising the brix to make a more complete wine. We are proud of the 95 points, Gold Medal at the State Fair. Enjoy a glass of our award-winning wine.” Winemaker Robert Smerling
Pairs well with BBQ, Italian, and Mexican food, grilled meats, and bold cooking.

After 19 years of making wine at Renwood, which I founded and named after my wife Rene, we were looking for a new challenge. My daughters wanted to open an urban winery and I wanted a boutique winery where we could produce wines from the best vineyards and control the process. Cabana was born in 2011, our first 7 years were in Sacramento, and as the focus became on expanding our production, we moved to Lodi. At Cabana, we ferment in small lots and barrel-age the wine in French oak. Then I used my 30 years of wine-making experience to produce the final blend of our award-winning wines. We now produce 18 wines from Lodi, Napa, and Amador counties.
Our heritage is from Boston and Newport, RI. Cabana’s name is from our days at the beach in Newport. RISKs our premium wines stand for Robert, Irene, Sarah, Kelly & (son-in-law, Sam) the Smerling family. RISK Cabernet, is the pinnacle of my 30 years as a winemaker, winning numerous double gold medals.

Barely made it home due to winter storms and such, and was greeted with another opportunity to rat; wonderful!
Appearance - A deep dark purple with rich pink banding on the very edge. Lovely colors.
Aroma - Faint from PnP up to a few hours later. Warm strawberry and subtle pepper, with no hints of alcohol. Not really much going on in the nose.
Taste - Slight butter(diacetyl? didnt last long), muted tart berries and licorice initially. Firmly present tannins, and not much short term evolution within a sip nor long term evolution from hour to hour. This wine lacks faults and drinks well, but mostly lacks depth and character. I’m not getting much fruit expression from this wine, and so that just leaves me feeling a bit underwhelmed… even at this price. I will save half of the bottle for lunch tomorrow, to see if it opens up at all. Perhaps this one really needs another year or two to mature?
Before I posted this I thought it could possibly be an enticing QPR pick for those looking to stock their cellars, if the price was right, but for me this doesn’t warrant filling up the precious little empty space in my cellar. CM/WD will undoubtedly release another bombshell soon (they so often do) so I wont be jumping on this wine. Thanks for the opportunity, Alice!
Back at it with the “day after review”: the bottle was left closed on the counter last night, and i have just poured myself another glass. Aroma is a bit more generous with both berries and alcohol, both good things. The tannins have blended with the tart fruit much more to leave a well balanced, although still very dry mouthfeel. Flavors have not evolved massively, are still perfectly fine and pleasant, but are not overly impressive. Nothing to complain about here, but in my opinion, nothing to celebrate either…
For those of you keeping score at home, that 95 Point Gold Medal from the California State Fair was for vintage 2020 not the 2022 offered here today…details, details

@kaolis Is it free shipping for a gallon, or do I need to order so many gallons to qualify, do you know?
Seriously curious how buying wine by the gallon works. I don’t imagine it’s a consumer-facing business, especially not consumers on the other side of the country.
@knotworking Along the lines of what @kaolis said, a different producer specifies in one of their listings: “Will sell in minimum 55 gallon quantities.”
Interesting notes on the review by @emribecky about complexity, especially since winemaker was one of the founders of Renwood. You would expect similar characteristics. It’s funny, I started loving Zins (maybe too much) in the early 90’s primarily from Ridge and Renwood. My opinion was these were the two top Zin producers in CA. I also remember that Scott Harvey was the winemaker at Renwood at that time - maybe for 3 years at least. If I remember, the winery was called Santino Winery and I think Scott helped turn that winery into Renwood.

Bought a case of Cabana PS on the last offering and was flummoxed reading other mates’ positive reviews because the wine I received is undrinkable. Hope mine was just a fluke!

I had a bottle yesterday. Still really good. Some bottles have sediment. Some don’t.

@knotworking They probably prefer to move all 1000 gallons at once…so grab yourself about twenty 55 gallon drums and you’re golden

wondering too how a shiner sale would work with ABC regs on labeling and taxes. Sales only to other producers?
Had my second to last bottle of this recently. Really good/great daily drinker that holds up well the 2nd day.

We got the email yesterday, but FedEx didn’t try to deliver until this morning and we were out at the grocery. store.
I love a good Petite Syrah but regretfully I won’t be able to post a review until after the deal ends.
@eburke they’re sneaky like that. You’re not giving your driver enough bottles

Anybody able to compare this to the 2021? I’ve certainly been enjoying that.
