About Château Val Beylie: “This 19th century château, about 25 kilometers south of Saint-Émilion, was purchased in 1933 by the grandfather of the current owner, Christophe Pont. Christophe Pont took over the Château from his father several years ago. Previously all grapes were delivered to the local cooperative, but Christophe believing in the quality of their vineyard and organic farming skills, began making and bottling his own wines. Château Val Beylie is certified organic and produces mainly red wines, building on the classic Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc of Bordeaux with a bottling called ‘Plaisir.’”

TASTING NOTES: “‘Plaisir’ means ‘pleasure’ in English. The wine presents a deep purple color with a clean, fruit forward nose, smooth in the mouth with red berry candied fruit with hints of smoke and good acidity, nice and balanced on the finish. While Christophe’s first vintages were aged in barrique, his new ‘sans chêne’ approach creates a naked example of Merlot where you can smell and taste the dense clay soil that makes Beylie’s terroir special. This is an amazing wine full of freshness and elegance.” (AbV 14%, pH 3.58, TA 3.25 g/L, RS <2 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The displacer beast, one of the more iconic monsters from Dungeons & Dragons.

Part of the game since its first edition in 1975, the displacer beast has had a pretty consistent appearance and description over time. A large black panther or puma-like creature with six legs, four hind and two front. From its shoulders sprout two tentacles tipped with dozens of thorny barbs. Emerald-green eyes. They are intelligent hunters that live for the kill, whether they are hungry or not. The name comes from their ability to bend light around them. This allows them to appear roughly 1-3 feet away from their actual position. They literally displace themselves. They also have a natural, mutual hostility toward blink dogs, intelligent dog-like creatures that can teleport short distances.

The displacer beast bears some resemblance in concept to the Coeurl of writer A.E. van Vogt, first found in his 1939 story “Black Destroyer.” The Coeurl was a highly intelligent black, cat-like beast that fed off the phosphorous of other large animals. When a human space expedition lands on their planet, a starving Coeurl and the humans enter a battle of wits and resourcefulness to get off said planet. Rather than manipulating just light, the Coeurl could manipulate all frequencies/vibrations somehow.
