TASTING NOTES: “A flagship of our Estate. Ultra black, rich and unbelievably smooth. Ripe blueberries, black plums, and blackberries with crushed vanilla and hints of sweet tobacco, smoked meats and cocoa bean linger on this smooth. A long term very age worthy elegant wine.” (AbV 14.9%)

VARIETALS: 55% Syrah, 27% Mourvèdre, 18% Tannat

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Vantablack. Because of that “ultra black” bit.

Most people might know Vantablack for being the darkest black material ever created. Indeed, it absorbs something like 99.96% of visible light (perpendicular to the material). What you may not be familiar with is, well, what it actually is.

With the way it’s been talked about, you might think it was something like a paint color. A particular pigment of black. In truth, it is a layer of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays, or VANTA. Carbon nanotubes, or CNTs, are grown through chemical processes where a hot, carbonaceous gas decomposes through specific metal catalysts, causing graphitic nanotubes to form, and they form vertically due to molecular forces between the tubes. Simple!
