A flagship of our Estate. Ultra black, rich, and unbelievably smooth. Ripe blueberries, black plums, and blackberries with crushed vanilla and hints of sweet tobacco, smoked meats, and cocoa bean linger on this smooth. A long-term, very age-worthy, elegant wine.
Winemaking
We continued to age this wine for an additional 6 months in the barrel, which created an unbelievable complex blend that is elegant and refined. Wonderfully complex wine, blackberry and blueberry, with a hint of perfume, orange zest, and tarragon. Wonderful hints of black currant and plum along with licorice and cardamom linger on the finish.
Vintage
The 2019 growing season was a relatively gentle and steady growing season, our grapes were later season harvests which in combination with the mild late summer weather allowed for longer hang time for the grapes on the vine. Longer hang time, under these current near-perfect conditions, allows grapes to evenly develop rich color and more complex flavors.

Dearest reader, allow me to impart upon you the tale of a failed delivery vindicated. Notified of shipment not but a few days prior, I eagerly awaited the scrumptious mystery bottle. On the day of delivery, I was saddened by my responsibilities for work, as I was unable to answer the call at my door. I sorrowfully watched as the courier disappeared from my threshold.
But alas, dearest literary purveyor, he returned on the morrow and bequeathed upon me a bottle of 2019 Estate Cuvée Costa Vinedo. Hailing from the vineyards of Sonoma, contained with the land of California (to the west or so I’ve heard), this magnificent morsel of humanity does well to quench my thirst. Chilled at first, but then allowed to breath to the temperature of the space, the body presents itself lightly, the legs not near as tall as a hobbit, and the smell of chocolate and berries engulf my senses. It’s rich, but not heavy, nor lends itself to strong flavors of ethanol, meaning this that the power of the alcohol is well contained in the breadth of the sip.
After such a night of crafting for children’s camp, and a days worth of work, this near night ending drink is a wonderful way to kiss the night good night and good riddance. Until tomorrow, on which we shall finish the merriment and revel in the good of our day and lament the sorrows the daybreak brings. Happy drinking, many blessings, and may the winds always carry you forward and towards the light!
I received notification last week that a bottle was arriving for review/posting tonight. Unfortunately, the poor bottle seems to be the victim of a suboptimal shipping experience.
It departed CA the evening of 7/3, arriving in Louisville KY around 2:15 am on 7/4. I imagine the holiday is to blame for the delay in movement…the bottle sat (presumably in a UPS truck or non-temp-controlled facility) for 96 +hours in 90+ degree temps. It finally arrived at my building (in Chicago) shortly after 1pm today, 7/8. When I picked it up from my building’s box/delivery room at around 7pm, it was still warm to the touch. I will report what I can.

Pop and Pour
Cork: Not protruding, no leakage. Cork feels soft (spongy?) but came out intact.
Appearance: Dark, inky, slightly purplish garnet color. No noticeable bricking.
Sniffy sniff: First impression is a bit vinegary and medicinal. After about 20 minutes I can tell there is some fruit but can’t pick out anything in particular. There is also a strong herbal background. There’s something else I can’t quite describe. Perfume? Soap?? Maybe there were floral notes that have gotten lost?
Taste: Astringent, almost bitter, a bit “hot”. I do taste some fruit and herbal components, but again, can’t pick out anything specific.
I wish I could say this wine is delicious, but this poor bottle is not. I do believe it has some degree of heat damage. I can almost tell that it would be really good. Having read their description posted in the sale thread, I’m really sad that this seems to be damaged. It sounds lovely. What I’m smelling/tasting has whisperings of their description but it is definitely “off”.
As always, thanks to Alice, WD, and the folks at Costa Vinedo for the opportunity to contribute to the Rat Program. Apologies for the negative-ish review. I’m hoping there are other rats that received bottles that didn’t get held hostage over the holiday weekend. I suspect this wine is really good…I just can’t confirm that. I will try it again tomorrow to see if anything good happens to it.

@alacercogitatus
So this is Sonoma?
Most of the write-up suggests Paso Robles; the location of the resort/winery…
@alacercogitatus I’m honestly not a fan of reviews like this one . Tells me nothing about the wine.
@alacercogitatus @losthighwayz yeah, idk that I can even tell whether the wine is good or not.
@alacercogitatus @losthighwayz @Ten9Eight @rjquillin it is clearly Paso/Adelaida as listed. It is in fact still available on their website.

@alacercogitatus Edit as reply because I can’t edit the post
Perhaps it was the wine so late and after a day of meh-rathoning but here are the highlights :
