The occult includes a bunch of things that don’t really fall under any major religion and have not much place in science. Astrology, alchemy, mysticism, witchcraft, parapsychology, the whole shebang. Any practice involving the “otherworldly.” Not all of it is interrelated. Mostly it’s a hodgepodge of old and new rituals and practices that have no scientific basis and no place in organized religion.

Astrology claims that distant celestial bodies determine and influence the lives of individuals depending on their movements. Alchemy believes you can perfect materials and transmute them into other things, but not in the way that we actually, you know, chemically refine things or manipulate atoms. Parapsychology involves brain powers, extra senses, prophetic visions, and interacting with spirits. You’ve got various forms of divination, like reading bones, reading palms, reading entrails, reading tea leaves, and reading cards.

All-in-all, it’s fun to imagine that waving your hands in a certain manner and saying words in a different language might have an effect on the world around you that doesn’t involve you getting escorted from a national park for disturbing the natural environment/other park guests. It’s exciting to see things play out in a way eerily similar to what was predicted by a deck of randomly drawn cards or in a dream. Just be careful with how much time and credence you put into it.
