Rex, the Wonder Horse

TASTING NOTES: “The Merlot in this blend adds to the nose and the Petit Verdot to the front palate. The Malbec sits in the back where you taste blackberries. The tannins tend to be softer than Malbecs from Argentina.” (AbV 13.4%, RS 0.5 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Rex, the Wonder Horse. Also known as Rex, King of the Wild Horses.

Born in 1916, Rex was a trained horse, but still a bit of a wild card. Trained by a man named Jack Lindell, who acted as his handler, Rex could perform some tricks on camera. Pushing, chasing, rearing up and bucking, nudging, biting things. In fact, part of why Lindell took to Rex was Rex’s apparent desire to bite whips whenever they were cracked near him. He was an ornery horse, would chase people around on set at times.

Yet despite that behavior, he was in something like 20 movies between 1920 and 1940, the heyday of silent pictures all the way into early talkies territory. Most of the films were Westerns, naturally. If you wanted a horse that could put up a fight, you went with Rex.

Whether he’d fight you in the process, who could say.
