Another Year Alder

TASTING NOTES: “Our third vintage from this legend of a vineyard in the far northern reaches of Mendocino County. Just 12 miles from the Pacific at 2400 feet in elevation, this is a cooler site. And it shows in the wine. Cranberry mixed with forest floor and bramble burst from the glass. Followed by hard cherry candy and ripe red raspberry. This is just a picture perfect showing of a cold climate Grenache Noir. Fermented 100% whole cluster and aged for two years in once used French oak barrels which give it just a touch of oak. And bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve freshness and laser like focus.” (AbV 13.8%, pH 3.58, TA 5.88 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Alders again.

So, there are the Alder trees of the genus Alnus, but there are some more alders out there.

Witch alder refers to the genus of Fothergilla, which isn’t a tree at all. Instead they are deciduous flowering shrubs. Then there are also plants called “dwarf alder,” although rather than referring to a genus, it’s a colloquial name that can refer to a couple unrelated species.

Confusingly there is a witch alder that can be called dwarf witch alder, Fothergilla gardenii. So alder isn’t witch alder, and witch alder isn’t dwarf alder, but witch alder can be dwarf witch alder.
