Tempo refers to, at least in music, the speed at which a piece of music performed. Obviously, this isn’t in terms of something like meters per second of miles per hour or anything like that since we’re not exactly going anywhere. Instead, it is beats per minute or BPM. Music is written in units called measures. A measure is in turn divided into beats. You can determine how many beats are in a measure for a particular piece of music by looking at the Time Signature, typically one number on top of another at the start of a piece of music. The number on top is how many beats are in each measure. The number on the bottom is what note length counts as a beat. The most common time signature is 4/4, meaning four beats per measure, and each beat is a quarter note. A quarter note is called a quarter note because it is one quarter of the standard measure. So, to go back to tempo, if you have a tempo of 120 BPM and a time signature of 4/4, every quarter note takes exactly one half of a second to play. Music is complicated.
