About Halcón Vineyards
Inspired by the wines of Northern Rhône and the characteristics of Mendocino, Paul and Jackie Gordon set up shop in the Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino and the Anderson Valley. Passionate about their organic farming, the couple focus on letting the terroir of the Rhône-like Yorkville Highlands climate shine in their wines while maintaining a balanced, healthy, and thriving vineyard.

TASTING NOTES:
Alturas Syrah - “This version of Alturas is a slightly less savory than previous vintages but has very bright, forward red fruits. There is great complexity and lots of stony minerality. It is drinking well straight out of the gate. This vintage of Alturas is a very worthy successor to the previous vintages.“ (AbV 12.7%)

Elevación Syrah - “This syrah offers up a superb aromatic constellation of cassis, black raspberries, bonfire, dark soil tones, black olive, pepper and hung game. On the palate, the wine is deep, pure and soil-driven, with a full-bodied format, rock solid core, great backend mineral drive and a long, tangy, ripely tannic and complex finish. This may well be America’s finest bottling of syrah! 2029-2070.” -John Gilman, March 2020

BARRELS:
Alturas was aged in 90% neutral oak and a single new French puncheon, Elevación in only neutral French oak.

TANGENTIALLY RELATED FACT to help you make conversation over this wine:
Alturas is the Spanish word for “heights.” Acrophobia is the fear of heights. Asustado de las alturas translates to being scared of heights. Unexpectedly, this is a separate fear from basophobia, or fear of falling, a base human instinct. A fear of heights doesn’t necessarily require falling/thoughts of falling I guess, and a fear of falling doesn’t require anything particularly high to fall from. Fear of falling is instinctive, and fear of heights is conditioned or due to trauma. And neither of these things are vertigo, which is the spinning sensation caused by a conflict between multiple senses (and often happens when high up).
