We utilize organic farming, small lot fermentations and traditional techniques to make balanced, food friendly and site specific wines.”

Grapes to Plowshares

TASTING NOTES: “This Old-World red blend of Old Vine Carignane and Grenache comes from vineyards in the North Coast. The grapes were picked by hand, 75% were de-stemmed with 25% Whole Cluster, and cold soaked for 5-10 days. We fermented each lot using native yeast in small open-top tanks, punch-down by hand, and aged in French Oak barrels. This wine is not fined or filtered. It has complex notes of boysenberry and earth, is rich and velvety on the palate, and finishes with fine tannins and balanced acidity.” (AbV 13.8%, pH 3.59, TA 5.9 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Swords to plowshares, or ploughshares.

A phrase that means to turn from a path of war to one of peace. Featured in the Book of Isaiah, although it’s unclear if that is the origin. It quite literally refers to turning sword blades into plowshares, a plowshare being the sharp part of a plow. The plowshare turns the earth in the rut made by the coulter, a spike that hangs in front of it. Farming was viewed as a peaceful alternative to war, so the plow can easily be seen as a symbol of that.

Unless you consider the man who, wielding just a plowshare, slaughtered Persians in the Battle of Marathon. But I assure you, he is a statistical outlier and should not be counted.
