Nostalgia. A powerful force. Things were always better in the good old days, no matter what the generation. But why does that seem to be the case? Is society on a perpetual decline, a slide to ruin, or has humanity on the whole suffered some shared delusion?

Well, the latter. How can we make such a determination, though, if we’re all subject to it?

Science! Studies have surveyed people prior to, during, and some time after an event. It has been observed that the same person more often than not gives an event a better evaluation after the event than during. People have a predilection toward keeping positive memories and experiences.

This creates a sort of survivorship bias, where our perceptions become based on what survived for us, what was retained, rather than a holistic view. Thus people consistently rate the past as more positive than the present and the future.
