TASTING NOTES: “This inky blend of Petit Verdot and Tannat is bright and bold with a punch of bright plum. Dark cherry and winter spice consume the mid palate. A broad tannin finish with a lasting impression of cacao nib.“ (AbV 14.50%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Coraline, by Neil Gaiman.

Coraline Jones is a young girl who moves with her parents to a new town and into an old “apartment” building populated by a few eccentric neighbors. Her parents are very busy with work, though they love her very much. Feeling bored in the new location and disregarded by the adults around her, Coraline discovers a small door in the old building that leads to the same building, but different.

In this different version, she encounters a being that identifies itself as her “Other Mother.” It does indeed resemble her mother in most ways, except for being a little taller, a little thinner, and with buttons for eyes. There are other “Others” in this place, all a little more exciting and fun than their real counterparts, but it is clear that the “Other Mother” is in charge of things.

As Coraline grows suspicious of this Other World and its intentions for her, the “Other Mother” begins to change, gradually. Taller, thinner, and paler with longer fingers, but still those button eyes. She says Coraline could stay in the Other World, if she wanted to.

All she has to do is receive a pair of button eyes of her own.
