About Le Vigne Winery: “Le Vigne is a 2nd generation family-owned winery located in the heart of the Estrella District AVA on the Eastside of Paso Robles. The winery has operated within the same family since the year of its inception. The property was purchased from country music star Buck Owens in the 1960’s, was planted with its first set of vines in 1981, and has been producing wine for over 30 years.”

TASTING NOTES: “Aromatics of honeysuckle essence and freshly grated lemon zest. On the palate the rich, viscous mouthfeel is balanced by a lingering acidity with hints of Meyer Lemons and Marcona almonds.“ (AbV 14.1%, RS 0.20 g/L)

VARIETALS: Chardonnay.

BARRELS: Fermented in stainless steel. Aged in Eastern European oak, 10% new.

PAIRS WITH: Grilled or sautéed shrimp with a citrus sauce.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The Meyer lemon, because really, what is a Meyer lemon?

The Meyer lemon originated in China. It isn’t even a lemon. It’s a cross between a citron and a mandarin/pomelo. How does a Chinese citrus hybrid end up called a “Meyer lemon” in the first place? Easy. A man named Meyer brought one back to the US in the early 1900’s and registered it!

Okay, okay. So Meyer was more than just some dude who carried a fruit out of China. He’s a dude who carried about 2,500 different plants out China! Introduced a lot of things to the US, like soybeans.

Unfortunately, his bosses tasked him with getting 100 pounds of poppy seeds so the US could make morphine for soldiers in World War I. Poppy seed possession was a serious crime in China. He would die while attempting to find and procure the seeds. It is unclear how or why, but it happened on a boat.
