TASTING NOTES: “Right from the first burst of dark fruit aromas, you know this wine means business. Late Summer-ripe black cherries dominate the nose, with a whiff of vanilla bean. Silky, yet bold textures, meld with the blackberry, dried cranberry and black plum fruit notes. The lovely finish is miles long, and lingers with hints of cherry cola, espresso and rich dark chocolate.” (AbV 14.8%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Lollapalooza! Nowadays a mainstay music festival held in Grant Park in Chicago every late July/early August, it has an interesting history.

First off, it wasn’t always just a big, stationary music festival. It was created, originally, as a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction. Rather than just do a standard tour, they, particularly Perry Farrell, decided to make it into a big sort of celebration of alternative music and just alternative entertainment in general. So you had Jane’s Addiction headlining in 1991, because it was their farewell show, but then tons of other acts were brought in, and not just bands.

Next year, 1992, the headliners were Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the festival, while still a tour, started to open up to more commercially successful bands. By ’96, after Farrell had to step away for a different project, they had Metallica as a headliner, which caused many to question the state of the festival as a showcase for alternative, non-mainstream acts. The original incarnation of the festival died after the next year, as both the festival and the alternative genre had declined significantly in popularity.

Then, Jane’s Addiction got back together in 2003, so they tried to do some new Lollapaloozas. It didn’t work out great. 2004 had one planned and then canceled. It was after this, they decided to make it a single destination festival in Chicago with even more artists involved. And that’s how it’s been ever since.
