The Picture of Dorées Gray

TASTING NOTES:
“Bright and intense with a red-garnet color; on the nose, a gourmet blend of flowers, red berries and soft spices. On the palate, it is round and ample. The Pinot Noir from the Pierres Dorées terroir offers a wine with a great freshness, underlined by concentrated black fruit aromas with a superb length.” (AbV 13%)

The Picture of Dorian Gray, published 1891, was Oscar Wilde’s only novel. A Victorian aristocrat, Dorian Gray is known for primarily his beauty. Lord Henry Wotton, an associate of painter Basil Hallward, espouses on his own hedonistic world view as Basil paints Dorian’s portrait. After hearing Lord Henry’s perspective, Dorian begins to believe that beauty is the only thing worth pursuing, going so far as to wish his portrait would age rather than him. Dorian’s wish comes true, and as he explores a more sensual and increasingly amoral lifestyle, finds the portrait to become more twisted and aged over time. Dorian’s actions directly and indirectly cause the deaths of multiple individuals, and even by the time he decides to live a better life, his portrait is still becoming worse. He realizes his attempts to be righteous were out of a desire to restore the picture and not genuine. Seeing no other recourse, he stabs the painting, which restores the picture but leaves Dorian dead and disfigured.
