TASTING NOTES: “The 2021 Nuestra Sangre Red Wine is a rich Napa red grown in the spectacular 97-point 2021 season. It’s bold and plush, muscular and structured, with a beautifully velvety texture. Ruby in color, followed by aromas of violet and chocolate covered cherries. This wine coats the tongue with flavors of mocha, coffee and ripe cherries, leading to a smooth finish. The back tannins on this wine can take on some fat…” (AbV 15.3%, pH 3.71, TA 5.8 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Nuestra Sangre, meaning “our blood.”

They probably mean it in a family way, and maybe as a double-meaning with how a dark red wine is blood-like in appearance. But let’s talk blood.

Human blood is made up of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Plasma is the actual liquid part of the blood, being mostly water, but also carries proteins, nutrients, and waste. Red blood cells are the primary cells in it, what with their carrying oxygen to your tissues. The red comes from the iron-based hemoglobin proteins that oxygen binds to. Oxygen-rich blood cells are bright red, and oxygen-depleted blood cells are dark red. Platelets are just cytoplasmic fragments released from bone marrow that plug up holes in the walls. White blood cells are much less numerous but seek out alien materials in the blood to neutralize. There are additionally five different types of white blood cell, each specialized to a different function.

So yeah, blood. It’s what’s for dinner (not really, unless you’re a vampire).
