2021 Madrigal Family Winery Nuestra Sangre Estate Red Wine, Napa Valley, Calistoga
Tasting Notes
The 2021 Nuestra Sangre Red Wine is a rich Napa red grown in the spectacular 97-point 2021 season. It’s bold and plush, muscular and structured, with a beautifully velvety texture. Ruby in color, followed by aromas of violet and chocolate-covered cherries. This wine coats the tongue with flavors of mocha, coffee, and ripe cherries, leading to a smooth finish. The back tannins on this wine can take on some fat, and we recommend pairing this wine with a nice marbled seasoned steak or a nice charcuterie board.

Since the late 1930s, three generations of the Madrigal family have farmed some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards. The family history is a constant source of inspiration and guides us in our winemaking now. We value the long relationship we’ve had with the land and the people here, believing that the combined wisdom of the folks who’ve been here for generations and a deep appreciation of these vineyards can be tasted in our wine.
Today, the company is run by Chris Madrigal, the founder’s grandson. Our winemaker is the acclaimed Ed Sbragia, who built his reputation over 30 years of winemaking in the Napa, Sonoma, and Dry Creek Valleys. Ed’s wines have won awards for years and, he’s proud of the reputation he’s earned. “I just do what I love and work with the gifts of the land,” said Ed. “All with a passion and pride passed down through generations at home.”

2021 Madrigal Family Winery Nuestra Sangre Estate Red Blend - $$80 = 29.63%
Color; Ruby
PNP: A little closed, vegital, plum, cherry, Cedar
Medium Finish with some acidity, grippy tannins
Decanted and it opened up. Petite Sirah popped out to me. Vegital nose evolved to be green bell pepper and black pepper. Wine became more integrated with time, and very pleasant. The decant was needed.
Estimated casemates price at $19-22 per bottle, so it seems like a good deal at the case price.

“The 2021 Madrigal Nuestra Sangre Calistoga Red Blend offers a nose of red currant, sage, menthol, Fig Newtons, crushed rocks, dried rose petals, and Christmas spices. On the palate, it delivers black currants, dried fruits, and liquid minerals, with slightly drying tannins. Well-structured and balanced, this wine shows depth and complexity, with a focused finish. Drink now through 2030.”
These guys showed up with offers in several Berserkerdays.
Also in 2024 the vineyards and winery were sold to Jayson Woodbridge of Hundred Acre with the Madrigal family keeping the brand.
…that’s it for useless info you either know already and/or don’t really care
@kaolis@rjquillin Worked for me on Linux OS. I had to click on the ‘play’ icon, anywhere else didn’t work. I only checked to see if I got sound, I don’t have an hour right now to listen to all of it.

I picked up some Cabs and PS’s years ago from an auction house in Chicago, Hart-Davis-Hart. Nothing wrong with the new label design but I kind of like the old one too.

Nuestra sangre = “our blood” Sounds like a good Halloween wine.
Wonder how well Madrigal’s wine goes with its Pollos Hermanos divison’s food.
2% PS makes it a blend?
@chipgreen maybe the sideways effect? I wonder if it sells better as “red wine” than labeled as Merlot
@chipgreen @CruelMelody appears the makeup of this wine changed vintage to vintage, this one happens to be merlot dominant.
