How do we have mint refer to an herb but also refer to (literally) making money? Well, it’s the good old-fashioned evolution of different words out of Latin into English. Mint, the herb, came from the Old English “minte,” which came from the Germanic “minta” or “minza,” which started with the Latin “menta” and Greek “minthe.” Cause Minthe was a nymph that was turned into a plant, something the Greeks had a proclivity toward. Mint, as in the verb having to do with money, goes back to a different Latin root, “moneta,” which had become the Germanic “munita” and eventually the Old English “mynet.” And that’s how you get words that are the same but not.
