Mongrel typically has a negative connotation these days, even with dogs, but its origin is actually very straight forward/innocuous. It is derived from the Middle English “mong,” which means mixture. Mong in turn is derived from the Old English “gemong,” which means mingling. Also, gemong/mong is the source of the word “among.”
