TASTING NOTES: “Led by its striking dark crimson hue, this Super Tuscan style wine opens with aromas of ripe berries and black fruits, interwoven with hints of vanilla, caramel, raw tobacco, leather, clove, blood orange peel, and roasted walnuts. On the palate, the rich and generous flavors of briary blackberry, dark cherry, ripe plum, cassis, and red pear are enhanced with nuances of wild sage, cinnamon, black pepper, dark chocolate, and a kiss of fine oak. As the wine opens in the glass, the smooth velvety texture is balanced with bright acidity, supple tannins, and firm structure. The result is a stylish proprietary blend that is robust, elegant, and showy in its youth, and strengthened by layers of complexity, natural richness, and backbone that will allow the personality of the wine to expand in the cellar.” (AbV 14.6%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Muscadine grapes. Hard not to draw the comparison between the names, though they aren’t related. Nor are muscadine grapes related to the French variety Muscardin, nor are either of them related to the gangs of violent, perfumed young men called Muscadins during the first half of the French Revolution.

Muscadine grapes are a species native to the South, as in the American South. Accustomed to hot summers and with relatively tough skins, they have remarkable survivability in the wild. The grapes usually range from bronze and red to black, though some varieties like scuppernong can be green. They aren’t exactly consumer-grade grapes with how thick their skins are and less juicy they can be, and many of the grapevines require pollination from a pollenizer to bear fruit, but they’re still iconic and have their fans.
