About Prima Materia
“Prima Materia is the product of two decades spent in vineyards, wineries, and cooking in restaurant kitchens that ranged from Michelin starred to hamburger consulting. I planted most of Prima Materia’s grapes at 1,450’ of elevation in Lake County’s red volcanic soils, and every bottle hopes to capture a distinctive, Old-World inflected voice in harmony with California’s vast and evolving wine history. Prima Materia is a bottom-up adventure that begins with digging holes, pounding stakes, and constant time spent in the vineyard. I am proud to work within an ancient agricultural tradition, and that vast, sometimes cyclical history is a central part of Prima Materia’s story and trajectory.”

TASTING NOTES:
“Striking aromatics of fig, olive, and black cherry.”

“Red fruits of raspberry maceration plus plum notes… pepper, smoke, tea leaf. Medium, fine-grained tannin with characteristic low-ish but still present acidity and with robust mouthfeel… The Zin red fruit is there, but so is the Primitivo bramble. No new oak, drinking closer to a modest old-school Dry Creek Zin blend with Petite and Mourvedre than the softer, creamier and oaky style.” (AbV 14%, pH 3.78, TA 5.6 g/L)

Perhaps one of the most beloved and well-known video games in history, Final Fantasy VII heavily features a substance called Materia. What is Materia? Imagine you made the Earth bleed actual blood and condensed it into hand-sized crystals. Then imagine you could use that blood to ask the Earth to change reality a little bit. Bend it to your will maybe. Materia is that. Materia is crystalized mako, aka the lifestream of the planet, that lets you do magic stuff. If you don’t have materia, you don’t have magic. Some materia is particularly important/dangerous. Particularly black materia, which can be used to, well, call a meteor down to the planet to cause massive damage to it and likely wipe out much of life. Then, when there is a gaping hole in the ground and the planet tries to recover by directing the lifestream to it, stand in the middle to become god. Or something like that. It’s been a while.
