1959 and All That

TASTING NOTES:
2019 Rodney Strong Reserve Malbec, Sonoma County: “Rich with aromas of briary berry fruit, boysenberry and light floral undertones. On the palate, black cherry and currants give way to dried herbs and fine tannins for a lingering finish.” (AbV 14.5%)

VARIETALS: Malbec.

BARRELS: 24 months in French oak barrels, 75% new.

PAIRS WITH: “Honey glazed pork chops, oven roasted winter vegetables or a petit filet with a spicy peppercorn sauce.”

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Sonoma County in the 1950s.

When Rodney Strong hung out his shingle during the Eisenhower administration, Sonoma County had less than a quarter of the population it has today. Most of vines dug up during Prohibition hadn’t grown back. There were more apple trucks on the road than bachelorette party tour buses. And the term “wine country” was something people applied to Italy or France, if they even said it at all.

But that was the start of the boom, thanks to the likes of Rodney Strong Vineyard, the 13th winery bonded in the revitalizing Sonoma County wine industry. And in no small way, it was the start of not only “wine country” as a travel destination, but of the United States becoming a wine country itself.
