Our Rodney Strong Malbecs are crafted from meticulously farmed blocks of some of the best vineyards in Sonoma County. Only the lots that display complexity, richness and intensity are considered for bottling.
Tasting Notes
Our 2019 Reserve Malbec is rich with aromas of briary berry fruit, boysenberry and light floral undertones. On the palate, black cherry and currants give way to dried herbs and fine tannins for a lingering finish. Enjoy this wine with honey glazed pork chops, oven roasted winter vegetables or a petit filet with a spicy peppercorn sauce.
Vintage Notes
2019 was another fantastic vintage in California. In Sonoma County it started with a copious amount of rain saturating the soil in late winter and early spring. Early summer heat waves acclimated the vines to warmer weather, which allowed the grapes to withstand a later heat spell in August, moving the sugars higher and allowing flavors to ripen. For our 2019 Reserve Malbec, select areas within each vineyard are hand harvested, fermented separately and aged in the finest French oak. After aging, each lot is tasted and graded and only the best are considered. The blend is then assembled, and the wine is aged 24 months before bottling.

No room, but very tempted as this is likely to be great juice. Any folks in Atlanta want to split a case? I’d love to take 3-4 bottles, but probably should not buy more than that.
2019 Malbec (Reserve) by Rodney Strong Vineyards, Sonoma County, California
Clear, intense plum-ruby color. Bright plums, cranberries, damp forest floor. Swirling vigorously adds tertiary herbal notes of fennel and pine wood.
Body greets with a thin (for a Malbec) body. Slightly ripe plum flesh up front. Mild tension holds the body together long enough to enjoy a soft, silky mouthfeel with fully suspended dusty tannic structure. This all quickly vanishes into the sides of the palate leaving behind slightly waxy lips and plum skins.
This is a Malbec for Pinot lovers. I’ve had Pinot bigger than this. A medium bodied Sangiovese comes to mind. It is considerably restrained, displaying more subtle nuance than one would expect from this varietal. This likely has to do with the region in general, perhaps even the Vineyard and ultimately the winemaker’s vision and intent.
It’s pleasant, easy, very approachable, while preserving good fidelity. A Malbec for a more refined and discerning palate.
