Contrary to the strangely lasting belief, yo-yos have never been weapons. The story goes that Filipino hunters would wield large ones to subdue animals hundreds of years ago. In truth, it was a rock tied to a long cord that they could use to retrieve it easily. The mechanics of a yo-yo weren’t really involved. Yo-yos have actually been toys for 25,000 years, found in a variety of cultures and a variety of time periods like Ancient China, Greece, and Egypt. They are actually the second oldest known toy in existence. It would be the Filipino version that would catch on as the toy’s official name as Pedro Flores came to the US and started a yo-yo business. Donald Duncan bought the company and that version of the yo-yo would become the standard.
