Dork has two potential roots. It could be from the Norwegian “dorg.” Probably not. What it really is likely to be is something called a bowdlerization. What’s a bowdlerization? In 1818, Thomas Bowdler, an English physician, took 36 plays by Shakespeare and censored them to make them family friendly (after this sister had done a version with 20). So, to bowdlerize is to make family friendly. What is dork making family friendly? Dick. It’s dick.
