Scott Harvey Wines was created out of market demand for Scottās wines ā āniche wines that over-deliver.ā The Scott Harvey line focuses on Scottās roots ā Barbera, Zinfandel, and Syrah from the Sierras. Approachable, food-friendly, and full of luscious fruit, these wines have struck a chord in the marketplace.
After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux ā and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation ā Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, itās no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. Itās an overnight success 40 years in the making. (Oh, and Scottās not too shabby with a pen, either.)

Tropical, creamy, thirst quenching, these are all terms I would use to describe a Caribbean coconut rum and pineapple cocktail. Lucky, golden ticket winner, someone who is about to have an upgrade to taco Tuesday. These are all terms Iād use to describe me!
Like others before me, I saw an incoming alert from UPS that I had a package requiring a signature enroute. I assumed this was for the District 7 Estate Grown Pinot Noir, alas, that shipping notification would come a few days later. No, this notification was for something much less controversial, a 2019 bottle of Scott Harveyās Mountain Selection Barbera. While Iāve enjoyed many bottles, err, cases of wine from Scott Harvey, I believe this is my first bottle of Barbera, partly because Casemates hates Connecticut and will no longer ship Scott Harvey wine here. Itās okay though, many people who live in Connecticut hate the state as well.
So, on to the wine! Pouring the first glass, itās a deep and dark plum color. The first whiff is Earthy, with plum, black cherry, a hint of spice, and a hint of chocolate (more on that later). After sitting for around 10 minutes there was a brief tinge of an alcohol smell, but it didnāt last (probably because the wine didnāt last long in the glass). It was never detected again.
Dinner was pork tacos with pickled onions and a little heat. The wine paired well with these, just as good with food as without. Itās amazingly smooth and balanced from start to finish. Each sip seems to offer an explosion of flavor. Itās on the drier side, but not dry. I feel like this would pair with anything (or nothing). Full body, low tannins; itās amazing. Now I remember why Iām upset Casemates wonāt ship this to Connecticut!
For the second glass, I pulled out some chocolate that came with a previous port offering (that is also on my auto buy list), and eating chocolate accented a chocolate flavor in the wine. While I wouldnāt turn down a piece of chocolate cake with a glass of this Barbera, I felt it paired better with savory food instead of sweet. I let the rest of the bottle sit for a week to see how the flavors would develop. Just kidding (Iāll forever be in awe of folks that donāt finish a bottle of wine), there was nothing left of this bottle by the time the dessert course was complete.
If this doesnāt sell out, it should. I was beyond stoked to be able to rat a wine that is no longer available in my state. From one Plymouth (Connecticut) to another Plymouth (California), cheers!
@markgm thank you for this and for this: ā I let the rest of the bottle sit for a week to see how the flavors would develop. Just kidding (Iāll forever be in awe of folks that donāt finish a bottle of wine), there was nothing left of this bottle by the time the dessert course was complete.ā I cannot understand how people can put the bottle away for another day!
Survey saysā¦nope wrong show. And nope no 91 points from WE. Both 89. Seems some sloppy proofing of details in a few recent offersā¦???
Wine Enthusiast says about the Mountain Selection:
89 Points. This smooth but nicely tangy wine combines extra-ripe red- and black-cherry flavors with appetizing acidity for a very focused effect. Mild tannins let the fresh fruitiness shine through. JG
And the J&S:
89 Points. This complex and deceptively full-bodied wine lifts ripe blackberry and red-cherry flavors with good acidity and light tannins for a lively, chewy texture thatās very appetizing. True to its Italian roots, this wine should be very versatile in food pairing. JG
@rjquillin ha! Well they reviewed 8 of his 2019ās and 5 of them were 91+ just not these 2. So Iām guessing he submitted them and guessing 5 out of 8 means a friendly relationship
I was lucky enough to get a bottle of the J & S Reserve delivered to my door on Monday. I let it rest for a day and opened it last night. I still have a bottle of the 2016 Barbera in my rack from a few years ago, so I was excited to give this a try.
It had a beautiful crystal clear garnet red on the pour.
On the nose I got cherry and blackberry with leather and subtler notes of plum, currants, tobacco, and maybe some slight baking spices. I was really excited to start tasting.
We didnāt let it rest or aerate it, but that didnāt hurt the experience at all. On first sip I got cherry, currant and plum with a little smoky/tobacco flavor (in a good way!). Itās not a fruity wine though. It has a bit of acid and a dry, super clean finish. Light tannins. It was bright and flavorful without being overwhelming. It drinks lighter than a lot of Barbera I have had (not that Iāve had much) and seems like it will pair well with a lot of foods. (Although I could easily sip this by itself or enjoy it with a light-to-medium bodied cigar). Easily a bottle I could have with dinner, or just to sip on while relaxing in the evening.
Unfortunately, last night we had rigatoni in a creamy tomato sauce, and the wine would clash with all the cheese and fat so I didnāt get to pair it with a meal. But it would be great with many meat dishes and the recommended steak tartare.
I still have some left and I will sip on it this evening, if anythig changes I will be sure to update.
I know Scott Harvey is an autobuy for many, and this is definitely one I would love to have in my cellar!
Hi Everyone, Always great to be back on Casemates. Just flew in from Tahiti. Tried to get on while at the airport in Papeete but couldnāt make the connection. Jana and I were guest lectures on the cruise ship Paul Gauguin. Then we stayed in one of those bungalows over the water for 5 days in Moorea. Had a wonderful time. Thanks for all the great comments on the wine. Yes the alcohol did creep up in the 2019 vintage. But I left it alone since the wine balanced it well. 2019 was a vintage with a cold wet spring. Vineyards from the Napa Valley floor faired okay with a warm sunny period during flowering. Unfortunately, three weeks later when the high elevation vineyards in Amador flowered we had cold wet weather. This caused a poor set and diminished our crop size in half. This gave us less wine, but more extractive and flavorful wine that balances out at a higher alcohol level. Cheers,
Scott
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations).
2019 Scott Harvey Barbera Mix - $10 =Ā 4.75%
Note that despite the modest additional case savings vs. the 4-pack, the ratio is different for the two allocations. With the 4 pack you get 25% J&S vs. 75% Mountain Selection. In the case deal you get 33% J&S.
The J&S has a higher retail value, thus the case is worth more than 3x the value of the 4 pack. I will not attempt to estimate how much more.
@chipgreen It has been said that the best way to get the correct answer online is to state a wrong one and wait for the correction. So, casemates, feel free!
Discount from MSRP to casemates price.
4 Pack is 1(44) + 3(29) = 161. Casemates price 70. That makes a 70/161 = 43.5% discount.
Case is 4(44) + 8(29) = 408. Casemates price is 200. That makes 200/408 = 49% discount.
1x44 + 3x29 = 131. Price is $70, so savings of $61.
4x44 + 8x29 = 408. Price is $200, so savings of $208
If one were to buy 3x the first offer at a savings of 61x3, they would be saving $183 vs the $208 saved on a case, therefore a $25 difference in savings.
To calculate the additional case savings, we divide 25/210 = 11.9% additional case purchase savings.
/giphy dandy-nearsighted-teeth
In for 4. This is one of my favorites that Scott makes. I love both the mountain and J&S. I have older vintages and really no more room ā¦ but I just couldnāt pass this up.
Aarrgghh!! I was trying to hold out and maybe just get a 4-bottle āsamplerā because Iām a sucker for Scottās wines and havenāt had his Barberas in a while. My racks are full with cases on the floor, but Iām in for a case, with thanks to @chipgreen for pointing out the 4 bottle to case ratio.
@beckyneumann4 These wines are made to be 15 to 20 year wines. They will develop bottle bouquet at about 8 years. This is when the tannin molecules in the wine chain up. The wine becomes softer and the fresh fruit changes more into an aged fruit character.
Snap out of 4 bottle shipments, anyone in Atlanta area want to split this? Iād be willing to do up to half, my wife would shoot me if I did the full case. I got vmp for the free shipping.
@lionel47 Iāll do the split. Iām in Macon but head up to Atlanta for shopping once a month with the family, and usually once a quarter to dahlonega for a wine pick up.
@lionel47@springbank this my first time doing a split and Iām not certain if thereās an easy way to coordinate a meet up, once shipped via case mates.
Comparing this wine to gas?
In for a case, was holding off, as I try to limit my buying when itās around the $200 mark. Then I thought, heck, itās not much more than a tank of gas for my F150, will last a lot longer, and a taste thatās much better and enjoyable.
@TX_Cinco
Itās possible you may have reached your limit if youāve ordered a lot of Scott Harvey. Iāve seen other people run into that issue before. Most people are unaware of any such limit until theyāve reached it, and I think it might only apply to people in certain states.
Keep in mind itās not a Casemates rule, but a governmental law/regulation. (A stupid one at that.)
@kawichris650@TX_Cinco
Interesting, never heard of state limits being imposed on CM.
CM, otoh, generally does impose a 2 offer limit, and wonāt even let you order additional. Note that is 2-order, not 2-case. @winedavid49 Your thoughts?
@kawichris650@rjquillin@TX_Cinco@Winedavid49
kawichris is right - some states have either per recipient and/or per winery limits on the number of cases that are legal to ship. Sometimes itās in the aggregate and sometimes itās more like per winery-recipient pair. Itās silly, of course. But so are most wine shipping rules. Obviously I have no idea if thatās happened here.
@kawichris650@klezman@rjquillin@Winedavid49 thanks for the info Iāve been abroad for a while and havenāt ordered off casemates in a while nor my wife. I doubt itās a personal limit. Probably just an error in the system. Iāll have to keep an eye out for next time.

@losthighwayz yeah thatās my thought too. I very much trust Scott and his winemaking but this is an alcohol level that I usually taste as bitter.
@klezman @losthighwayz website lists the red label at 15.4 not 14.9 fwiw
Note that this is a 1:3 or 4:8 bottle ratio! Itās not half and halfā¦
@TimW thanks, almost pulled the trigger without noticing
@TimW Ditto. My credit card is safe and SIWBM stands.

Which leads me to guess the case savings is 5.5%
@KNmeh7
I see what you did there.
So, MSRP confirmed as 44/29 by checking Scottās website.
I should mention that 210 is the divisor because that is the amount you would pay for 3x the 4 bottle offer.
@chipgreen @KNmeh7 yay!
