TASTING NOTES: “Discover a treasure chest of flavors. Jammy fruit, pepper and spice, mulberry and spice cake come together in the aroma to a rich full-bodied wine with bright red-purple fruit. The dark chocolate umami center extends to a lingering finish balanced with light astringency. Oak aging contributes to the rounded complexity with just a hint of sweetness.“ (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.57, RS 0.8%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Hero, or Heron, of Alexandria.

Little is known about Hero’s life, and most of what remains are a few of his manuscripts and references to him in other works. It’s not entirely known exactly when he lived, either. Most seem to think he was alive during the 1st century.

So what’s the deal with this dude? Turns out: he’s the inventor of the vending machine. That’s right. Back in the 1st century, he created a vending machine. You put your coin in the slot, it falls onto a lever, and the lever lets water flow out until the coin falls from the lever. Pretty neat.

Also, he described the first known steam engine. Was it very useful? Not necessarily. You essentially have a wheel that shoots steam out of two sides, causing it to spin. What else did he make… a wind-powered pipe organ, a hydraulic water fountain, and a self-filling wine bowl. Fun stuff.
