2021 Scott Harvey InZINerator Hero Label, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Discover a treasure chest of flavors. Jammy fruit, pepper and spice, mulberry and spice cake come together in the aroma of a rich full-bodied wine with bright red-purple fruit. The dark chocolate umami center extends to a lingering finish balanced with light astringency. Oak aging contributes to the rounded complexity with just a hint of sweetness. Try this wine with any grilled meat or chicken, or pair it with pizza, pasta, and burgers!
After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. (Oh, and Scott’s not too shabby with a pen, either.)

2021 Scott Harvey InZinerator, Amador County (Hero Label), winemaker Mollie Haycock, bottled by Super Hero Wines, Plymouth CA
On p-n-p: A medium-body wine, fairly transparent in the glass, forms legs fairly quickly. No strong aroma. Tastes a bit sweet initially, but that quickly subsides. My wife thought it was “okay”, but she wouldn’t buy any. I had open a 2019 Peterson Zin; we both thought it was better. My daughter also tried it; her opinion was that it was sweetish on first sip and finished fairly strongly tannic, but that it was young and the two would probably come together with time.
The second night it was much the same. My daughter thought there were some raisin-like notes, but they were not prominent. It went fine with Indian food and with Cajun catfish the night before. All in all, I thought it was an easy drinker, good with a variety of food, but since my cellar is full, it didn’t tempt me. (Seeing the offer, the opening sweetness makes sense considering there is some Muscat in the blend. The case price certainly seems fair.)
Alice, thank you so much for lobbing a softball my way.
tl;dr Buy it! You will love it.
So, I got the email from Alice that said I’d be getting wine, and I was apprehensive; what if it was awful, what if it wasn’t in my wheelhouse?
Well, I went to my local pickup spot and tore into the package. Lo and behold! It was a bottle of 2021 Inzinerator and a Casemates glass.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
My wife was working from home, and had 2 co-workers coming over for “Supervision” later in the day. At 5:02 PM I interrupted their “work”, and suggested that they have more serious work to do; Lab Ratting a bottle from Casemates. They seemed willing to undertake the task, so we got started right away. One of the women was a known wine enthusiast, so I knew I could count on her opinions. The other, I had never seen drink anything but tea, however, she was also willing…and gave some very insightful feedback.
We popped and poured four reasonable sized samples and proceeded to sniffy-sniff. I detected alcohol, over a melange of dark fruits (I can never pick out just which ones). At 14.5%, I was surprised that the EtOH was so apparent. The non-drinking taster got the same impression, and also commented on the conspicuous legs or tears that were produced upon swirling. The alcohol overtones didn’t deter us, and we all immediately went in for a greedy quaff.
I was bombarded with adjectives; Rich, Full-Bodied, Smooth, Robust, Well-Balanced, Great Mouthfeel. The wine was excellent! I might also note that there were no harsh tannins apparent.
I scurried down to the basement and brought up a 2019 Inzinerator with the Superhero label; can’t drink that one…so I scurried back down and found a 2016, Popped it and poured us all a taste. It was very good, but not as full-bodied or viscous as the 2021. When offered a refill, everybody wanted the 2021.
There you have it. I’m an Inzinerator fan, and this is perhaps the best I’ve had. I did notice that the 2016 was sourced from California and the 2021 was sourced from Amador County.
Buy it, buy it all and enjoy!
Oh! and I’ve found a new Casemate. The “wine enthusiast” wants to split a case. I can do that…reluctantly…
@FritzCat Response to previous Rat.
For me, this is almost an autobuy.
Tannic? I didn’t get that at all.
For us: Low acid, full-bodied, lots of fruit/some sweetness…yeah, the Forte will do that.
This is a different style Zin than others, it is not balanced by acid…you might call it a fruit bomb, and I like that…for what it is.
No smoke taint detected (that was so 2020).
And, Thanks for adding the Superhero bottles.
Edit: Oh, and the price is right! Thanks.
Hi Everyone, The Caldor fire started 10 miles northeast of the winery. Prevailing winds blew it north and north east. So we never experienced any of the direct smoke from the fire. To get smoke taint the smoke has to be fresh and not completely burned through to effect the vine. In the early mornings the spent smoke would be brought down over us by the morning down mountain breezes. Since this was older spent smoke we it did not effect the vines. We tested the wines as they were being made and found out we had escaped from any damage. Cheers,
Scott

Paging Wilfred Wong, paging Wilfred Wong…89 points. The 2021 Scott Harvey InZINerator ZINFANDEL is an easy red wine with a textured, yet crisp finish. Try it with lightly spiced, grilled lamb sausages. (Tasted: April 23, 2024, San Francisco, CA)
Hi Everyone,
Great to be back on Casemates with our InZinerator. The wine that you all helped develop and design when we were wine.woot The Lab rat report mentioned a light alcohol smell. This is due to the Forte that is traditionally blended into this wine. Forte is our Port or fortified wine. The Forte is fortified with 190 proof alcohol. Even though the Forte is only 10% of the blend the high proof in it shows when first opened and then blows off. Look forward to answering questions throughout the day. Cheers, Scott
@ScottHarveyWine This is true, the alcohol was apparent upon pop-n-pour, but did not persist at all. And, the Forte really adds to the overall flavor. Yum!
SH is typically an autobuy for me.
InZIN is always an autobuy.
This was the first wine that brought me and several other friends together on the old site, as we were all so excited and interested to try out this blend.
I had no idea all those years ago that it would keep me following SH’s offerings online.
This purchase will push my cellar up over 40 bottles of InZIN on hand.
@Drez143 yeah, same. This is one of the few brands that harkens me back to them olden days. InZin has always been a staple and an auto-buy, but I haven’t had any in my cellar for years, probably back to the W.W days. In for 6!
@woopdedoo
Even more mysterious (to me, at least)… how do you add 10% Forte and 2% Muscat but still keep the RS below 1%?
Also, how about a 100% Forte offering? I have been hoarding my lone remaining bottle (2006) for years as I slowly work through Wellington, Kent Rasmussen and Pedroncelli.
Hi Chipgreen, I miss the winemaker dinners at the Wooster Inn and getting together there. The Forte is only 7% RS. We just bottled our 2015 Forte. So, we now have enough to do an offering on Casemates. I’ll ask Jana to figure it our with WineDavid. Cheers, Scott
In NYC. Have never made a casemates order with success and I admit to missing woot. SH Inzinerator was one of my faves there! Willing to split a case with another local who’s interested!
Glad to see this as I sometimes have missed the offer. Others in MD haven’t been so fortunate to find the InZINerator, but I’ve introduced a few to its Hero power. It’s as much fun to give bottles away as it is to drink. Just in time for some fig parties!
@rjquillin it had some odd smells which made me clean my glass out multiple times to try again , but more importantly it tasted like a very cheap store-bought wine. I’ve had literally multiple cases of this wine and it was always very good… iI’m not sure if it could’ve been damaged or something. I may try and put it in my seller for a while, but I really can’t drink it. I’ve only had a couple instances here where I’ve received wine that was really not good. I was buying this back in the Woot days. I’ll have to do some more detailed analysis with my girlfriend. Disappointing as the only commented profile was the sweet finish and the rest was not pleasant.
Not even a Scott Harvey wine!!..made by someone named “Mollie Haycock”, though she might be a nice person, this was NOT disclosed on the sale of said, “Scott Harvey” wine…
No wonder it tasted so bad…
I’m very wary now of these”auto-buys”….
I thought a “inZinerator” from Scott Harvey wines was an actual Zin made by SH….
“This” was far from it, and not even made by SH, but “winemaker” Mollie Haycock…who I’m sure she’s a nice person, but this?? Sheesh….
@dkralston
Scott has only been the “consulting winemaker” for awhile now but maybe Molly’s wines are just starting to get released? Perhaps Scott should be overseeing the operations a little more closely. It would be a shame to see his reputation take a hit because of a poorly chosen successor.
@dkralston
I should note that I have not tried any of the wines produced by Mollie and I don’t think that Scott would hand the reigns over to just anyone but initial reviews of this particular wine are pretty discouraging, notwithstanding Fritz’s glowing labrat review.
@dkralston what’s false about it? Most wineries with somebody’s name in the label aren’t made by that person.
Scott has been training Molly for most of a decade. He also trained Rusty, winemaker at Noceto.
@dkralston@klezman
Except that this isn’t most wineries and Scott has a long history as the winemaker. It’s understandable that some people might be upset/disappointed to first learn of the change, especially if that new knowledge is gained as a result of looking more closely at an underperforming bottle.
@chipgreen@dkralston oh, I was disappointed when Scott announced he was stepping back and letting Molly take over the day to day. But that was at least 2 years ago, I think. He’s been very open about it on previous casemates offers.
@klezman “What is false about it?”
Oh gee, maybe you are tasting a crap wine, and when you point at your glass, then point at the bottle, and say, “that is not a Scott Harvey Zin”…
And then, looking back at the bottle…AHA! surprise! Its’ NOT a “SH” Zin…! I was right!
I bought this “Zin” because I have a history with it, and really, really like it!
So, is that “False” or is that “True”?
I don’t mind another winemaker at the winery, but they should disclose that! You know that blurb about the wine makers on the bottom left of the CaseMates website? They could have easily made the comment it was made by Mollie H., not Scott Harvey…
We can then make our own honest decision…
But I knew from the first glass…this was not a SH Zin…YMMV…
@dkralston@klezman
Scott has mentioned it here on more than one occasion, although it might not have been during an InZin offer. It’s unfortunate that you missed the information. For me, it wouldn’t stop me from buying a Scott Harvey wine until and if I noticed a drop in quality, which may have happened with this bottling. Hopefully just a one-off.

We just opened a bottle to enjoy (I bought two cases!) and it’s really bad. I feel duped. Not sure what is going on with it. Not sure what to do with 24 bottles that are not drinkable.
@lynnrae1 I can’t say we have been going 15 years, but damn near it.

@finewiner

@rjquillin it had some odd smells which made me clean my glass out multiple times to try again , but more importantly it tasted like a very cheap store-bought wine. @finewiner I found this almost undrinkable…was really bad…thanks I only bought a 6, not 12…
Just received on one of the hottest days of the year: 92-degrees in the box.
This was not a very good wine…which is surprising…too sweet, to cloying…almost undrinkable…thanks god I only bought 6…feel sorry who bought more…
