THAT REMINDS ME OF: Transmissions, as in the car part. Well, okay, transmissions can be in any manner of engine-powered machine, but for most people this means their car.

As you might imagine, engine RPM (revolutions per minute) generally do not have a 1-to-1 ratio with your wheels’ RPM. The car engine’s revolutions are also going to be in a single direction, but your car needs to go in two directions: forward and backward. To translate the engine’s output into a specific direction and output speed from the wheels, you need the transmission, also known as the gearbox. It is called this because it is full of gears! By switching which set of gears is involved in transferring the output of the engine to the wheels, you can make the wheels move at different speeds or in reverse, even if the engine’s output RPM were the same.

The most efficient gearboxes are manual. You, the operator, have to select the gear set you want to use based on how fast you intend to go. This, however, is somewhat complicated. So, most cars these days will use an automatic transmission. The gears are mostly adjusted automatically through the use of a hydraulic system (what transmission fluid is used for).

This is all my understanding, though. I am not a car guy.
